Personal Qualities

As a prospective early childhood educator and professional nanny you should have intelligence warmth and patience. You must be able to establish empathy with both children and their parents. You will be a role model for children, so it is essential you are well spoken, neatly groomed, self reliant, courteous and capable. You also need heaps of initiative!

The work is physically demanding, and you will be on your feet all day. You need to be able to carry babies, lift older children and plan strenuous games.

You must show you are mature and have ability to cope with the requirements of this rigorous course. A well-rounded personality, a wide range of life experience and an ability to work with the demands of young children is essential.

Interview

All applicants are required to attend a personal interview. If selected, your place will be confirmed well before the start of the course.

Summary of Entry Requirements

Applicants must be physically able to perform the work usually required of an early childhood educator or professional nanny; must supply contact details for three referees and give permission to contact them and must provide evidence of experience with children. All applicants are interviewed by the principal (or delegated staff member) to be judged capable of undertaking training to the required standard. For students aged 17 and over a police conviction check will be necessary prior to undertaking work placement.  Enrolment is provisional until applicants over 17 have completed the NZ Police conviction check process.  There are no academic pre-requisites, although a history of successful study would assist an application. 

Supplementary Entry Requirements -  New Zealand Certificate in Nanny Education

Applicants aged under 20 must have a minimum of 4 years secondary schooling and show potential to study at tertiary level (Level 5). Applicants aged over 20 only need to show evidence of their potential to study at tertiary level (Level 5). All applicants must provide evidence of previous experience with children and involvement in a range of cultural, social, sporting or community services.
